Nth Queenslanders bunker down as Cyclone Debbie nears

North Queenslanders are bunkered down this morning, as Cyclone Debbie nears the coast. The category four storm is expected to cross late morning. The weather bureau says powerful winds up to 175 kilometres an hour are beginning to lash the Whitsunday Islands and that gusts could peak at 250 kilometres an hour. The cyclone is also coinciding with a tidal surge. About 30,000 residents were asked to leave low lying homes, mostly in Mackay and Bowen. Residents whose house is by the river tell Annie Guest they expect to lose the contents of their home.
