Australian citrus prices set to rise as export market grows

Australian customers are being warned about a looming shortage of orange juice and citrus fruit, with much of the best local product heading for lucrative Asian markets. Over the past decade, prices have been so low that citrus growers were forced to leave the fruit to rot and bulldoze their worthless trees. But growing demand from Asian consumers and a bacterial disease that has halved production in Florida and Brazil mean that demand for – and prices of – Australian fruit are set to rise.
