Constitutional reform set to dominate Garma Festival

The Garma Festival, one of the nation’s most important Indigenous events, begins today in north-east Arnhem Land. This year’s festival will be particularly significant, as the debate over constitutional reform is set to be a key agenda item. The Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader are both scheduled to attend the festival and are expected to be pressured to spell out what kind of referendum they might support. Bill Shorten has written to the Malcolm Turnbull, suggesting a joint parliamentary committee be established towards a firm proposal.
